In the framework of cooperation between the Informatics Research Institute (IRI), the Scientific Research and Technology Application City, Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University and Dell EMC, the establishment of a number of winter schools began January 29th to February 9th, 2017 at the city’s headquarters in Borg El Arab.
These schools’ activities are sponsored by Dell EMC as one of the company`s contributions to building a knowledgeable society. The schools target students in the final stages of university education and fresh graduates, to raise awareness of state of the art technologies in the IT field such as cloud computing and high-performance computing (HPC), as well as to contribute to increasing competitive opportunities for graduates and bridge the gap between scientific research and the industry.
The IRI is considered one of the centers of excellence in the field of cloud computing and high-speed computers serving the research community in order to save time, cost and open up new fields in applied research. It is worth noting that currently preparations are underway to connect the IRI to the HPC unit to be stablished at the Faculty of Engineering, Alexandria University, thereby maximizing benefits and providing huge computational and storage capabilities for researchers on both sides. It is also worth mentioning that the servers and memory storage areas at the said center of excellence are based on the latest technologies provided by Dell EMC.
A number of officials at the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research will take part in the final meeting of those schools, as well as a large number of professors, advisors and information technology experts in the Egyptian market.
Prof. Walaa Mohamed Sheta, Dean of the Informatics Research Institute, affirmed the important role undertaken by the institute in developing the surrounding cognitive community through collaboration with Alexandria University, in addition to hosting many of the master`s and PHD students and supervising their work, as well as providing all facilities necessary for them to carry out their research.
On the other hand, he pointed out that the IRI welcomes the collaboration with large companies operating in the field of computers and Information Technology and introducing researchers to the latest up to date technologies, as well as training them on the use of these technologies. This is in addition to the essential role played by the institute in the implementation of many research and applied projects funded both locally and internationally, along with its contribution to the development and provision of modern techniques used in various applications such as renewable energy and water resources management.
Mohamed Tantawi, General Manager of Dell EMC Egypt, expressed his happiness with this meeting which reflects the extent of mutual interest between Dell EMC, universities and research centers. He added that these schools are considered an example of the company`s contribution in guiding society towards modern technologies and focusing on the academic alliance program.
There are 84 students in the third and fourth year at university who will be joining this program, in addition to a limited number of full-time, totally dedicated graduates over the span of two weeks, he said.
Through this school, a basic introduction will be given on the infrastructure in the field of cloud computing, where Dell-EMC continues being a leader in the high-performance computing (HPC) market with its expertise in the field of healthcare, as well as genome and life sciences, serving as a bridge to fill the gap between the high-performance computing (HPC) technology and the needs of its customers in science and engineering.
A workshop will be held to provide the opportunity for students to implement practical application using simple virtual machines relying on the latest technologies in HPC, performed by the IaaS (infrastructure as a service) system. Codes on the GPUs (Graphics Processing Units) will also be implemented to show speed and how to take advantage of Parallel Programming techniques (PPT). In conclusion, light will be shed on security challenges related to cloud computing.
