Swvl, the bus transportation network, announced the launch of its services in Alexandria, Egypt’s second biggest city and the charming pearl of the Mediterranean. With eight routes in Alexandria, Swvl’s expansion aligns with its vision to enhance its footprint and further expand into new cities and markets. The service has been available in Cairo since March 2017.
Driven by a similar mission to transform the transportation scene in Egypt and the region, Swvl, the brain child of former Careem market launcher in a number of Egyptian cities, Mostafa Kandil, managed to attract investment worth $500k in seed funding from Careem, the region’s leading app-based car booking service. By launching in Alexandria, Swvl aims to bring a more affordable, reliable and convenient means of transportation to the city of more than four million residents and thousands of seasonal visitors.
We are proud to announce the launch of our services in Alexandria, said Mostafa Kandil, co-founder, Swvl. Our strategy is to help revitalize public transportation system in Egypt and other emerging markets by providing an affordable, reliable and convenient means of commuting to everyone while creating job opportunities for the locals. As an Egyptian startup, we aspire to become a role model for other entrepreneurs and startups to overcome the challenges facing the local community.
Swvl users can save up to 80% compared to other on-demand transportation means. Users can also track the ride and book their seat. High-quality Swvl vehicles are set to arrive at the exact time shown on the application for greater convenience.
With the latest investment from Careem, Swvl is planning to expand beyond Egypt to other emerging markets in the Middle East and North Africa in 2018.
