A pioneering Egyptian startup launches the first device to treat jaundice in premature infants and a hearing aid for the hearing impaired.

With Egyptian technology, the first production line for medical devices for premature infants is launched.

The Egyptian startup BioBusiness, specializing in medical device technology, has announced the

launch of the first Egyptian production line for devices for premature infants under the brand name

CALIDA, utilizing 100% Egyptian technology and machinery.

Engineer Mostafa El-Wakeel, Chairman of BioBusiness, stated that the new production line at the

company’s factory in the Abu Rawash Industrial Zone in 6th of October City is the first of its kind in

Egypt and the Middle East, marking a significant milestone for the Egyptian medical device industry.

El-Wakeel explained that the line has begun producing the jaundice treatment device (BioLaxy) in two

models, Basic and Advanced, which help reduce phototherapy treatment time. He noted that it is the

first product on the new production line, designed by top Egyptian designers and programmers, both

locally and globally.

The Chairman of BioBusiness continued by saying that the device was officially launched during the

AFRICA HEALTH ExCON exhibition, held under the patronage of the President of the Republic and

inaugurated by Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly on behalf of President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi on

Monday. He pointed out that the company has a strategic plan for the next two years to produce

three devices for premature infants, including an advanced incubator of category (A), as the current

production in Egypt is of category (C). This is in addition to a warming device for premature infants

and a specialized ventilator for premature infants, featuring several patents and advanced

technologies that will be introduced to the Egyptian, Arab, and African markets for the first time.

El-Wakeel emphasized that his company aims to support the deepening of local manufacturing and

the localization of this industry in Egypt, which will save significant amounts of money spent on

importing these products from abroad, as the locally produced items will be of equal quality to their

foreign counterparts.

Engineer Mostafa El-Wakeel also revealed that during the exhibition, the first Egyptian model of a

hearing aid (Hearing Aid) for the hearing impaired will be unveiled. This hearing aid includes a Digital

Signal Processor that efficiently processes sound, features Bluetooth technology, and is economically

priced, suitable for all categories at half the price of imported hearing aids. It was developed in

collaboration with the Academy of Scientific Research and the Egyptian Society for Biomedical

Engineering.

El-Wakeel added that the medical devices for premature infants produced in Egypt will be 50% less

expensive than imported devices while maintaining the same efficiency and technology. He pointed

out that BioBusiness spends 30% of its annual revenues on research and development to advance

the medical industry in Egypt, aiming to turn Egypt into a regional hub for exporting this type of

medical device.

During the COVID-19 crisis, BioBusiness collaborated with the Academy of Scientific Research and the

Arab Organization for Industrialization to produce the first Egyptian ventilator, which helped alleviate

the shortage of ventilators in Egyptian hospitals during the pandemic.
