Egypt and Jordan Launch the “Coral Bridge” Subsea Cable in Taba, Marking a New Era of Digital Connectivity

First Direct Subsea Cable Between the Two Nations in Over 25 Years

Dr. Amr Talaat, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology, and Eng. Sami Al-Sumairat, Jordan’s Minister of Digital Economy and Entrepreneurship, witnessed via video conference the landing of the high-capacity “Coral Bridge” subsea cable in Taba, South Sinai.
This landmark project represents the first direct subsea cable linking Egypt and Jordan in more than a quarter of a century, positioning both countries as key players in regional and global digital infrastructure.

Connecting Three Continents and Powering AI Applications

The newly deployed cable stretches 15 kilometers across the Gulf of Aqaba and is equipped with a large number of optical fibers to ensure high-capacity international data transfer.
“Coral Bridge” establishes seamless connectivity between Asia, Africa, and Europe, leveraging the strategic geographic position of both Egypt and Jordan. It is designed to meet the surging demand for AI-driven applications, hyperscale data centers, and global cloud providers, while also reducing latency and operational costs.

A Strategic Step in Egypt’s Digital Infrastructure Expansion

Dr. Amr Talaat emphasized that the Taba landing of the cable is part of Egypt’s broader strategy to expand subsea cable infrastructure across Sinai, by creating new landing stations closer to neighboring countries.
He noted that Egypt currently serves as a global hub for internet traffic, with more than 90% of east-to-west data crossing its territory through a network of 15 subsea cables and 11 landing points. The new project, he added, strengthens regional connectivity and enhances the speed and efficiency of international data transmission.

A Digital Gateway for Jordan

Eng. Sami Al-Sumairat stressed that “Coral Bridge” reflects the deep-rooted ties between Egypt and Jordan and is a direct outcome of bilateral cooperation fostered by the leadership of both nations.
He described the cable as a strategic digital gateway for the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, supporting its ambitions to become a regional and global data hub. He also invited Egypt’s ICT Minister to visit Amman to discuss further opportunities for collaboration in the digital economy sector.

Boosting Regional Development and Integration

South Sinai Governor, Maj. Gen. Khaled Mubarak, expressed his delight at the Taba landing, highlighting the project’s role in strengthening digital connectivity with Jordan and supporting joint initiatives in telecommunications and tourism.
He further pointed out the importance of high-speed internet in promoting tourism and cross-border projects between South Sinai and Aqaba, including sports and cultural initiatives.

Built to Global Standards and Regional Partnerships

The “Coral Bridge” subsea system was developed to the highest technical, environmental, and sustainability standards, balancing performance, capacity, and environmental responsibility.
The project is the result of a cooperation agreement signed in January 2024 between Telecom Egypt, one of the region’s largest subsea cable operators, and Naytel, the telecommunications arm of Aqaba Digital City in Jordan.
This collaboration underscores the importance of cross-border partnerships in advancing digital transformation, opening new avenues for growth, and supporting future infrastructure projects across the Middle East and beyond.
