Huawei and Al-Wadi Al-Jadid Company for Mineral Resources and Oil Shale (WADICO) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to expand the use of Digital Power and clean energy technologies in Egypt’s mining sector.
The agreement was signed on the sidelines of the Egypt Mining Forum 2026, held under the auspices of H.E. President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi and organized by the Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources.
The MoU builds on the continued cooperation between Huawei and WADICO and aims to introduce advanced energy technologies that can support more efficient, reliable, and sustainable mining operations, particularly at remote sites.
Renewable Energy Microgrid Planned for Aswan
Under the agreement, Huawei will provide the technical and technological solutions required to develop a renewable-energy-based Microgrid at WADICO’s site in Aswan Governorate.
The planned system will have a total load capacity of 0.600 MW, with commercial operations targeted to begin on September 15, 2027.
The project will combine several technologies designed to improve the site’s energy infrastructure. These include solar power solutions, battery energy storage systems, and digital technologies for monitoring and managing energy consumption.
The cooperation will also include training and knowledge transfer, enabling WADICO’s teams to benefit from the technical expertise associated with the new energy solutions and supporting the development of capabilities required to operate and manage the system.
Supporting More Reliable Power for Mining Operations
The planned Microgrid is designed to provide a more efficient and reliable source of power for WADICO’s operations.
By combining renewable energy generation with battery storage and digital energy management, the project aims to improve the way energy is supplied and managed at the mining site.
The initiative is particularly relevant to remote mining locations, where ensuring a reliable power supply can present operational challenges. The integration of renewable energy and storage technologies is intended to support continuity while improving overall energy efficiency.
Reducing Diesel Consumption and Emissions
One of the key objectives of the project is to reduce diesel fuel consumption and associated emissions.
The increased use of solar power and energy storage is expected to support greater reliance on cleaner energy sources, while digital monitoring and management solutions can help improve the efficiency of energy use across the site.
The collaboration therefore combines clean energy deployment with digital technologies to address both energy efficiency and operational continuity within mining activities.
Exploring the Electrification of Mining Operations
The partnership extends beyond stationary power generation, with Huawei and WADICO also exploring solutions to electrify mining operations.
These areas include electric vehicles, vehicle batteries, and charging solutions, creating opportunities to expand the use of clean energy throughout the operational ecosystem.
Mining electrification could provide additional applications for clean energy technologies within the sector, while creating new requirements for energy storage, charging infrastructure, and digital power management.

WADICO Highlights Its Commitment to Clean Energy
Geologist Reda Selim, Chairman and Managing Director of WADICO, described the collaboration as an important step in the company’s efforts to develop its mining operations and enhance their sustainability.
Selim noted that WADICO is among the first mining companies in Egypt to adopt solar energy at its operational sites, reflecting the company’s approach to using clean energy solutions to support operational continuity and improve efficiency.
He emphasized the importance of the long-term collaboration with Huawei, particularly in benefiting from the company’s expertise in Digital Power and renewable energy to develop solutions capable of supporting 24-hour power availability at mining sites, especially in remote areas.
WADICO also expects to expand its cooperation with Huawei in the future by deploying solar and clean energy solutions at additional company sites. Such expansion would support WADICO’s growth plans and its move toward more efficient and sustainable mining operations.
Huawei Brings Global Digital Power Expertise to Egypt’s Mining Sector
Tony Bu, CEO of Digital Power at Huawei Egypt, said the cooperation with WADICO provides an opportunity to apply Huawei’s global expertise in Digital Power to the specific needs of Egypt’s mining sector.
Huawei has experience in developing energy solutions for mining sites and remote locations, including systems that integrate solar power, energy storage, and conventional energy sources.
According to Bu, such integrated solutions can enhance the reliability of power supplies while reducing dependence on diesel generators.
Through its cooperation with WADICO, Huawei aims to bring this experience to the Egyptian market and adapt it to the specific requirements of mining operations and remote locations.
The partnership is also expected to open opportunities for new applications of Digital Power across the mining sector while supporting greater energy efficiency, operational reliability, and sustainability.
Combining Renewable Energy, Storage and Digital Technologies
Huawei’s cooperation with WADICO comes as the mining sector continues to focus on improving operational efficiency and strengthening energy infrastructure while increasing the use of clean energy and digital technologies.
The partnership represents Huawei’s first expansion of its Digital Power expertise into the mining sector through solutions that combine renewable energy, energy storage, power electronics, and digital technologies.
This integrated approach is designed to address the specific energy requirements of mining operations, particularly those located in remote areas where reliable and efficient power infrastructure is essential to maintaining continuity.
The combination of these technologies can also provide a foundation for more advanced approaches to monitoring, managing, and optimizing energy use at mining sites.
A New Path for Sustainable Mining in Egypt
The agreement between Huawei and WADICO reflects a broader focus on developing more efficient energy infrastructure for mining operations and expanding the role of clean energy and digital technologies within the sector.
Through the planned Microgrid in Aswan and the exploration of mining electrification solutions, the partnership brings together renewable energy, energy storage, digital management, and electric mobility technologies.
The collaboration also reflects Huawei’s focus on leveraging its global Digital Power expertise to support the development of mining operations in Egypt and explore new opportunities for clean energy deployment, digitalization, and electrification.
Ultimately, the partnership is designed to contribute to improved energy efficiency, more reliable operations, and greater sustainability across mining activities, while creating a pathway for broader applications of clean energy and digital technologies at WADICO’s sites.
